Kendrick employs the skits on this album perfectly to fit the narrative and develop his character through the album (he got his real parents to play their parts on the album as well). Kendrick’s storytelling ability cannot be rivaled on this album from the very first song I am hooked on the character. I don’t think enough people really listen to this album. city“: What’s left to say about this album? It’s a masterpiece a tale of a young man from Compton who has to deal with his own internal struggles he faces with gang life and drug use, as well as external struggles with loss and the aforementioned gang life. If I had to give it a number (which I don’t personally like to, but some do) I would give it a solid 8/10. The standout tracks here for me are “ A.D.H.D.“, “ Rigamortis“, “ Kush & Corinthians“, “ Blow My High (Members Only)“, and “ HiiiPower“. I think this album is criminally underrated and everyone that like good music should listen to it. The album touches a lot on a lot of the same themes as his second (much more popular) album such as drug use, growing up in Compton, and internal conflict. In my personal experience, you can tell a hardcore Kendrick Lamar fan if they recognize songs off of this album (as well as his two other earlier mixtapes). “ Section.80“: This is Kendrick’s first album but gets the least amount of mainstream attention. Kendrick Lamar is the king of the current “new school” hip-hop with an impressive discography under his belt already. To round out the semester, I’m making a post that will be a list of (in my eyes) some essential artists and albums that any hip-hop head should know, especially more recent stuff, as I am more familiar with it.
